The egg

When we did the topic of dinosaurs we introduced it slowly by having an egg delivered. We then kept it on the writing table for the whole week. The children were then asked to write rules for looking after the egg and what they thought might be inside. They came in every morning looking to see if it had hatched. The egg was a rugby ball covered with paper. At the end of the week the egg did hatch and in the box was a dinosaur. Each class had a different one. We then looked at facts about our class dinosaur and  at the end of the second week we presented the facts to the other class.

The Number Machine

PICTURES 2012 2013 855

Here is a picture of the number machine I did last year, SAM for short (Subtraction, Addition Machine). The children dropped cubes down the first tube and wrote the number on the first piece of paper. They then repeated it with the second tube. The number machine did have a number line at the bottom but it had fallen off by the time I had taken the picture. The children then wrote the total on the final piece of paper. The back was cut out so someone could sit behind and operate the machine. That person then puts all the cubes that have entered the machine down the bottom tube and the children count to see if they wrote the correct answer. I have never seen children so excited to do addition.

1 more 1 less

Here is an example of a table top activity for 1 more 1 less. The children select a card with a number on and count that number of dog biscuits into the bowl. They then roll the dice to see if they have to add 1 more or have 1 less. They loved the activity and loved feeding the dogs real biscuits.

Fruit Faces

During a topic on ‘Healthy Eating’, we used fruit to make faces. We talked about fruit names and textures of the fruits. Afterwards we made fruit kebabs and fruit smoothies.

Holidays

We recently did a topic about ‘Places we had Been’. We set up the Reception block as an airport and pretended to take the children to Italy. They had great fun. We even got the parents involved. It is amazing what you can do with a bit of card and paint. The writing we got from the children afterwards was amazing.
